“Y'all are going to be a bad influence on little Lindon. Trei, you need to quit all that fighting. I’m serious boy, I mean what’s the point? You’re a bad ass for what, Trei? Now you’re selling weed, too? You probably got guns and everything, huh? Do you know where a gun will get you?” I asked still upset.

“I don’t know,” he said getting tired of hearing me bitch at him.

Eric gave me a kiss since he was leaving.

I watched Eric smack Trei hand then leave. I decided to let Trei off the hook for now, so we sat at the counter quietly. He stared out the window, watching his dad drive off before turning to me.

“Mom?”

I knew a question was coming. Trei wasn’t scared to ask anything because we talked about everything.

“What?”

“What’s dad profession?”

I looked up at Trei. He caught me off guard.

“What’s your profession?” he asked.

I looked down not knowing how to answer his question.

“What do any of you do? I’m asking because at school me, Ka’juan and Byron all got F’s because they asked us to write about what our parents do for a living, and then compare it to what we want to do. We didn’t know what to write. It’s okay because we can all turn it in late. Should we make up something? Do you have any suggestions?”

I looked up at Trei. He was starting to be an asshole and I didn’t like it, but there wasn’t much I could do since he was right.

“Didn’t think so,” he said getting up, walking out the kitchen.

“Come on Trei. I’m a take you over your mamma house.”

“What does she do?” he asked throwing his hands up.

“Trei, I get your fucking point.”

I pulled up to Damon and Shaya’s house.

“Where are you going?” Trei asked me.

“Don’t worry about it,” I said getting tired of all his questions.

“Y'all gonna be a bad influence on little Monni.”

“Trei shut the fuck up and get out my car.”

“Love you, too,” Trei said before getting out.

“Yeah, yeah,” I responded driving off.

He pissed me off but it wasn’t much I could do about it yet.

I went to the hotel that the boys worked at. The door man knew who I was so he let me in. He told me the boys were in the penthouse. This is usually where they plotted together. They had their own separate hotel rooms if they were working independently. I went up to the penthouse where naked girls roamed and smoke clouded the air. I saw Toya and Ciara sitting on the couch counting money. The way they laughed together made me remember what Salynne was saying.

“Hey,” I said staring down at Toya.

I could tell I startled her by the way she jumped up.

“Hey girl. What you doing here?”

“Looking for the boys,” I said taking a glance at Ciara.

“Why? What’s wrong?” Toya asked.

“Nothing,” I said dryly.

“They’re in the office but you know they’re handling business.”

I looked at Toya. She acted like their business ain't ours. Was that her way of telling me not to go back there? She doesn't tell me what to do.
